Kaagha

Musadiq Sanwal – husband, father, son, dear friend and a true artist. He loved performing live for music lovers and beloved friends, and was an avid composer and promoter of indigenous music. Despite being trained in Indian classical music, Sanwal was best known for his Sufi and folk music. he also composed across mediums for theatre, radio, documentaries, and alternative film to storytelling productions, each resonating with a familiar, everyday Pakistan.

Kaagha, his last album, is one in which Sanwal’s effortless vocals capture the essence of Sufiyaana kalaam by Baba Farid, Shah Hussain, Amir Khusru, Shakeel Badayuni and Bhagat Kabir. Sanwal’s musical composition is complemented by Bilal Brohi’s instrumentation. In this wondrous set, ancient folklore flows into modernity, heedless of time’s constructs, crystallized effortlessly.

Album Art Chronicles

The concept of album art has always been purely functional. You know the artist, you know the album name, usually named after one of the songs in the album, the album list in in the back and done. However, these five album covers prove that the art is just as important for creating the feel of the music and what you are about to listen to.

Rushk – SawalSawal
Here’s why the album art is so good: it reflects the “found” music of the whole
album. Just like found art is created with a collage of objects, the random selection of bleeps, sound clips, telephone rings that links every
song is found art interpreted in sound. The dentures between a set of clamps is a found art sculpture that denotes that you are about to listen to something haunting and unforgettable.

Peeli PattiNoori – Peeli Patti Aur Raja Jani Ki Gol Dunya
The minimalistic, almost cartoon sketch of Noori’s second album convey’s the whimsy and youthful vibe that has always been a characteristic of Noori’s music. There is an Atlas holding the world on his shoulders vibe here but instead the two stick figures could be Ali Noor and Ali Hamza balancing the weight of expectations as they deliver their second album to the world.

Mooro – PehliPehli
The psychedelic cover art of Mooro’s first album indicates the colorful happiness that permeates in his songs. Musically, the songs are full of optimism like the catchy Ronay Laga or the existential-but-still-hopeful Mein Koun Houn. As far as picture-of-artist-in-the-cover approaches go, Mooro’s illustrated one is attention grabbing.

Meekal Hasan Band – Andholan
Mekaal Hasan BandThere is definitely a love for illutsrations in most of these album covers and MHB is no different. Their calligraphic take with the central motif being the circle shows the method in the madness like the breathless Maalkauns. The music rises and undulates much like the tentacles emanating from the center of the circle, combining the elements of earth, fire, air and water.

The D/A Method – The Great Disillusion
The D/A Method has recently broken out into the mainstream and they are

incredible. The card sleeve opens into an exquisitely illustrated three panels that are full of surreal illustrations. The three tv screens show what Pakistanis love most which is fashion, cricket and Bollywood but again it could also speak to the plastic and material nature of our world. And in the style of music albums of yore, there is a little booklet with song lyrics and more Francisco Goya-esque illustrations. A work of art just like their solo album.

This week, we’re celebrating the birthdays of our absolute favorites, the insanely talented Meesha Shafi and Mekaal – check out this pyari Birthday Special PL from Patari and sing Happy Birthday, kids.

Want to put on some Indie and chill? Our Indie playlist should have all your favorites and some new ones you might not have heard before but will totally fan over now. Don’t believe us? It’s okay, humein bhi thora oversell laga tha but check it out, anyway. Our Top New Releases and Drama OSTs playlists have been updated with 50 of the best and newest tracks we asked/begged/sold our organs for.

They rose to fame with their satirical rap song ‘Burger-e-Karachi‘, but Young Stunners had many songs before and after this widely acclaimed single. Hailing from the city of lights, these Karachiites keep getting bigger and better! Proof is in this album. Saving the coolest and newest for last, 6LA8 has released a new album ‘Stupor‘. Broaden your horizons and give this album a try. Who knows, maybe the ambient, drone and post rock mix feel of this music is what you have been searching for all your life.

A room full of students, the CEO of an up and coming online music portal, and the best of Pakistani music in all its diversity, sheer brilliance and magic: Kinnaird College was kind enough to invite Khalid Bajwa to their Business Week for a talk, and fell in love with the music he shared from Patari. So for all you converts, if you’re new to Pakistani music and want to experience it in all its breathtaking glory, start with our Pakistani Music 101 playlist!

Thanday thanday mausam mein ice cream khanay ka maza hi kuch aur hota hai. Mix that with some amazing #PopRock songs and we get the party playlist of the season with Cornetto Pop Rock Season 1. We asked a bunch of desi Simon Cowells what they thought of the songs from Pop Rock’s two brilliant seasons. Check out the video here: Cornetto Pop Rock Reaction Video.

Mooroo’s Pehli is still the star of our Patari, sweeping away all the stats (most listened, most played, so much pyar, etc.). The complete OST of Dobara Phir Se and Saya-e-Khuda-e-Zuljalal –  an upcoming 2016 Pakistani action war film/historical film which explores Pakistan’s history, beginning from its independence in 1947 up to the present day – are also up. Not to toot our own Pakistani horn, but our cinema really has come a long way.

This week’s Patari Picks are featured on our homepage along with the latest in FXS’s #Hotcues series: With My – Block-2.

But if it happens every time, phir samajh lein aap ki kismat mein ye nahi likha. Aap ke bus ki baat nahi. Aap manhoos– okay, you get it.

Noori is an unstoppable force: they’re releasing songs faster than the students running to submit assignments on deadline days. Do listen to their song with Sara Haider ‘Dil Ki Qasam‘ if you’re in need of some motivation. (Yeh gana kahan tha jab hum Patari launch kar rahay thay?). Khudi ko kar buland itna ke har taqdeer se pehle,
Khuda bande se pooche bata teri razaa kya hai.
We all know who Baba-e-Pakistan is. But another major player behind it all is the ‘spiritual father of Pakistan’ Sir Allama Muhammad Iqbal. If it wasn’t for him, we wouldn’t have the privilege of having halal meat of our choice today. Patari brings you an inspirational playlist this week, dedicated To Sir Muhammad Iqbal.
Extra! Extra! We have something new and something old for you this week. As the saying goes, third time’s the charm and we’re hoping that applies to Noori’s ‘Yeh Zindagi’ too. For our Co-VEN fans, enjoy The Best of Co-VEN in our awesome compilation.
Seasons change, trends come and go but classic songs like Strings ‘Dhaani’ and ‘Duur’ never go out of style. Check out our new all exclusive Strings playlist! Update on our Drama OSTs playlist of all those songs that you can relate to while watching the series and have stuck in your head for the rest of the night.
Hot new RnB track by JOFU, the third in Forever South’s #Hotcues series: ‘Freed‘. Swag level tou up ho jaye ga boys and girls, but Pakistani parental advisory is needed or else brace yourself for  jootiyon ki barish with a background rap of galiyan by the ‘rents.
Also bringing you a weekly cosmos of elegant, funky, genre-defying sounds, one song at a time – check out Revultion by Tollcrane. Sometimes you need the beat to take you to another dimension when the voices in your head get too loud.

(Zyada deep honay ke liye maazrat).
